Liquidambar styraciflua (Sweet gum)
These deciduous trees produce some of the most spectacular autumn foliage known. The genus name literally means liquid amber, and refers to the resin exuded by the winter buds. Known as storax, the resin is used in perfumery and cosmetics.
Sweetgum fruit is a collection of small 2-celled capsules that from a spikey ball. Inside each capsule are one or two small winged seeds. The capsules also contain a granular substance that helps seed dispersal.
These photos show the beginning of the process to illustrate the seed pods. After numerous sketches, the drawing was transferred to hot pressed (smooth) water-colour paper and masking fluid was applied by pen and nib. Next, a tea wash of blue was applied to map out the shadows and apertures of the seed pods. The crazy, vivid painting is a quick “map” to highlight the beaks and caves (apertures). After a polychromatic wash to denote shadows, highlights and local colour, several washes of a “chestnut” blend of pigments were applied. It’s still early days, and there are many washes and refinements ahead….
